New developments in pain management
Self-care and pain management
Due to the current financial climate there is now greater emphasis within the NHS on achieving better value for money. One result is that customers are being encouraged to take more responsibility for their health by, where possible, self-medicating rather than making an appointment to see a doctor1. Pharmacy staff have a key role to play in encouraging self-care – particularly when it comes to pain management. Many customers already self-treat – sales of OTC medicines for pain relief in 2009 totalled £542 million, of which £369.4 million were for adult oral analgesics2. But many more need to be encouraged to follow suit.
Medicines management following organ transplantation
Most people who receive a transplanted organ (e.g. most commonly kidney or liver) will require a complex regimen of medicines, including immunosuppressant drugs, to reduce the risk of organ rejection. The complex nature of these medicines means pharmacists and their support staff have a vital role to play in:
• Making sure a patient continues to receive a correct, regular and consistent supply of their specific formulation and/or brand of immunosuppressant drug(s) to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ
• Helping transplant recipients with any queries they may have.

Eczema & Scalp Conditions
Eczema and some scaly scalp conditions can interfere with the daily life of those who suffer from them. You are in an ideal position to offer help, advice and knowledge to customers to help them deal with their condition more effectively and allow them to get on with their lives.
Management of Constipation
Constipation is common and affects people of all ages. Accurate figures relating to the prevalence of this condition can be difficult to determine, partly because constipation may be subjective. While some people, wrongly, believe that bowels need to be emptied daily for good health, normal stool elimination actually varies from three times a day to three times a week, depending on the person. What one person considers “constipation”, another may regard as normal bowel habits.
Tamsulosin for the OTC treatment of the urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia
The switch of tamsulosin from prescription to pharmacy classification (Flomax Relief) offers men with BPH convenient access to advice and appropriate treatment, and for the first time gives pharmacists a clinically effective and established treatment for BPH. Pharmacy can reinforce its position as a provider of accessible men’s health services and make a significant contribution to managing BPH and increasing awareness of the condition.
